Admirals Sail By Jeff County, 51-21

It was homecoming at Bill Clabo Field Friday night as the Admirals played host to the Jefferson County Patriots in an important Region 1-6A matchup. The Admirals were hoping to improve to 2-0 in the region and 5-0 on the season.

The Admiral offense got off to a blazing start, opening the first quarter with the ball and marching 74 yards on a nine-play drive that ended in a 26-yard Kyle Carter touchdown run.

The Ads led 7-0 less than four minutes into the game. The Admiral defense continued its strong play, as it has all year.  Farragut stopped a fourth down conversion attempt by the Patriots and the Admirals took over at their own 34.

Three plays later, a 49-yard Gavin Wilkinson to Hunter Shopovick touchdown pass put the Ads ahead 14-0 with 3:55 to play in the first. A three-and-out forced by the Admiral defense gave Farragut the ball at their own 31 yard line. A 50-yard Wilkinson to Jaden Gibbs pass on 2nd down set up a 13-yard, Kyle Carter touchdown run. Farragut led 21-0 as the opening quarter came to a close.

Another three-and-out by the Patriot offense and a 26-yard Wyatt Lucas punt return setup the Admiral offense inside the red zone at the 19. Kyle Carter would again find the end zone two plays later from 14 yards out to extend the Farragut lead to 28-0 with 10:52 left before half.

The Farragut defense again thwarted a fourth down conversion attempt by the Patriots. However, the Admiral offense began to have trouble finding its stride in the second quarter. A three-and-out, the first of the night for Ads, gave Jeff County the ball at their own 36. Five plays into the drive, the Patriots running back carried the ball into the end zone from 41 yards out making the score 28-7 in favor of Farragut.  A second consecutive three-and-out for the Admiral offense saw the Patriots take over at their own 32. Farragut’s defense would again come out strong, this time via a Jake Parsons INT on the third play of the drive.

The Admirals would take over with just a 1:35 before halftime. The drive looked promising, but the lack of time forced a 22-yard field goal by Daniel Bethel that put the score at 31-7 at halftime.

The Admirals kicked the ball away to begin the second half. The Patriot offense came out swinging, as it marched 42 yards on 9 plays to score on a one yard TD run. The Admirals still lead 31-14 with 8:21 to play in the third.  However, the Farragut offense answered quickly, as Kyle Carter’s 68-yard run on first down set himself up for a 4-yard touchdown run on the next play.

Farragut extended its lead to 38-14 with 7:46 left in the third. Another three-and-out by Jeff County and a 34-yard punt return by Wyatt Lucas, gave the Ads the ball at the Jeff County 25.  A four-play drive by Farragut culminated in 15-yard Kyle Carter TD run, his fifth rushing TD of the night.  Farragut led 44-14 with 4:31 left to play.  Another fourth down attempt by Jeff County was unsuccessful, but this time a loss of down penalty stopped the drive as the third quarter expired.

The Admirals found themselves with the ball inside the red zone at the 19 to begin the opening drive of the fourth. Three plays into the drive, Jake Evans found Alec Keathley in the end zone from 19 yards out.  Farragut led 51-14 with 10:35 left in the fourth and started a running clock.

The Jeff County offense would not lay down though. The Patriots marched 80 yards on 11 plays and scored on a 14-yard run to make the score 51-21 with 3:31 to play. A failed onside kick and two first downs allowed the Farragut offense to run our the clock.

When the final horn sounded, the Admirals had improved to 2-0 in the region, and 5-0 overall. Farragut will be back on the road next week to take of the Knox West Rebels. This is the final non-region game of the year for the Admirals. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm.
