Admirals Fall to Maryville 26-10

The Admirals traveled to Maryville Friday night to take on the Rebels in the TSSAA 6A Playoff Quarterfinals.

The Rebels won the toss and elected to begin the game on offense. A promising 12-play drive  for the Rebels ended as the Admiral defense settled in to force a 22-yard field goal.

The Admirals trailed 3-0 with 6:24 left in the 1st quarter.  The Admiral offense took over and led a 7-play drive that got to the Maryville 35, but was stopped on a failed 4th down conversion attempt.  The Admiral defense came back on to the field looking to continue its strong play and stop the potent Maryville offense. Unfortunately, another 12-play drive, this time ending in a 2-yard TD run, would give the Rebels a 10-0 lead with 11:27 left in the 2nd.

The Admirals took over with the ball at their own 17 yard line looking for their first points of the game.  The ensuing 10-play drive saw the Admirals move the ball to the Rebels’ 12 yard line before settling for a field goal attempt.  Two Isaiah Gibbs runs picked up a first down to start the drive and Gavin Wilkinson hit Tanner Corum for 14 yards for a huge third down conversion to continue the drive.  This was followed by a 22-yard Kyle Carter burst up the middle to get the Admirals into the red zone. The Farragut drive then stalled out and Daniel Bethel was called on to attempt a 29-yard field goal, which split the uprights and put the score at 10-3 with 5:58 left before half.

The Admiral defense would apply pressure on the next Maryville drive and force a three and out.  The Admirals would take over at midfield looking to tie the game just before halftime.  Farragut picked up one first down before a sack brought up a 3rd-and-22 situation.  A long Wilkinson pass was intercepted and gave the Rebels the ball back at their own 7 yard line.  The Maryville offense was able to drive down field on ten plays to kick a 40-yard field goal to extend their lead to 13-3 at halftime.

Farragut received the 2nd half kickoff looking for points, but an interception on the third play stopped the drive before it got going.  With the ball near midfield, the Rebel offense took over and needed eight plays to score a touchdown on a 4-yard TD run.  The Admirals trailed Maryville 20-3 with 6:48 left in the 3rd quarter.  A third down sack ended the ensuing Farragut drive and forced a punt.  A 42-yard completion sparked the Rebels next offensive drive and setup a 1-yard touchdown run.  The ensuing extra point try was no good.

The Admirals opened the fourth quarter with the ball, trailing Maryville 26-3.  The drive was short lived after two negative run plays put the Admirals in a tough 3rd and 17 situation.  Unable to convert, Brady Hodges punted the ball away.  The Rebels took over and six plays in to the drive were faced with a 4th and 3. The Admiral defense stood strong and forced a turnover on downs. However, the Admirals were unable to get anything going after a loss of 7 yards on first down were followed by two incompletions forcing another Admiral punt.  Another long Rebel drive was in store, this time it was 10 plays that got to the Admirals’ 11 yard line. The Farragut defense would again stand strong with their back against the wall, this time blocking a 28-yard field goal attempt.  The Admirals took over at their own 19 looking for their first touchdown of the night.

A 20-yard completion from Gavin Wilkinson to Isaiah Gibbs sparked the offensive drive. Several plays later, Wilkinson found Tanner Corum for a 35-yard completion to get the ball down to the Rebel 1-yard line.  The next play, Jake Evans scored on a QB keeper.  The final horn sounded and the Admirals season ended with 26-10 loss to Maryville.
