The Admirals took the field with a new look Friday night against McMinn County in a non-district matchup. Instead of the typical road whites, they sported an all silver look as they took on the Cherokees. That’s the only thing that was different about Farragut as they relied on their typical strong running game to wear down McMinn County as they won 24-24 to move to 3-1.
The first half was a defensive struggle for both teams as they continued to swap unproductive drives until late in the 2nd quarter. With 2:57 to go in the half, Jacob Johnson hit paydirt on a 9 yrd run. The Cherokees tried to counter but were stopped again by Farragut’s swarming defense. Just before the half, Cody Rule moved his offense into position to attempt a 46 yard field goal by Jonathan King. The kick was wide left and the Admirals took a 7-0 lead into the locker room.
The 3rd quarter belonged to the Admirals. Rule ran it in from the 2 at the 5:03 mark and Johnson scored on a 58 yard run giving him 5 TDs for the year.
The Cherokees were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter as QB Nathan Simbeck hooked up with Cedric Nevins on an 8 yard TD pass and Brandon Davis on a 19 yard grab over a Farragut defender.
Farragut capped off their scoring with 3:50 to go in the game as Jonathan King completed a 51 yard field goal – 1 yard short of the 52 yard record that he currently holds for his kick against Sevier County in a playoff matchup in 2010.
Defensively, Matt Lee wreaked havoc upfront all night for Cherokee QB Nathan Simbeck. Matt led the Admirals with 11 total tackles followed by Jacob Johnson, Jake Bruce and C.T. Leavell – each with 6 tackles. DB coach Chris Carson had to be pleased with the efforts of his secondary as Johnson, Bruce and Christian Jetton each recorded interceptions for the Admirals.
Next week, Farragut goes on the road to play the Rebels of West in a district battle. West will be out for revenge as the Admirals capitalized on 4 West turnovers to win 31-14. Both teams are at 3-1 and next week’s winner will be positioned as a contender for the district title.
