The Farragut Admirals football team cannot be accused of scheduling cupcake teams when setting up their non-district opponents In a game that was delayed for over two hours because of lightning, the Admirals opened up the 2011 season on Friday night by dropping a hard fought 14-7 decision to perennial power Kingsport Dobyns Bennett at Bill Clabo Field. The game featured two offenses that moved the ball fairly well but had difficulty getting into the end zone.
Farragut opened up quickly with Braden Urevick returning the opening kick-off to mid field. The Admirals moved the ball inside the Indians 30 with a couple of first downs but the drive stalled and a field goal attempt was blocked. D-B quickly got their offense into gear by moving inside the Admiral ten yard line primarily through the efforts of Devaun Swafford who highlighted this drive with a 60 yard run. The Farragut defense stiffened and forced a D-B field goal attempt that was wide right. The Admiral offense then drove the length of the field primarily through the efforts of Cody Rule and Jacob Johnson but a fumble inside the D-B ten yard line ended this drive.
Kingsport then proceeded to move 93 yards for the first score of the night. The TD came early in the second quarter on a three yard run by quarterback Charlie Cook on a play in which he was stuffed on an attempted quarterback sneak but then bounced outside to score untouched. The Admirals responded with a long drive of their own that was topped off by a perfectly thrown 35 yard touchdown pass from Rule to Urevick. This tied the score at 7-7 and that is where it stood at halftime.
The defenses on both teams were able to slow down the offenses in the second half. Neither team mounted a serious threat until early in the fourth quarter when the Admirals were forced to punt from their own end zone. A fierce DB rush forced kicker Jonathan King into a short punt that that set D-B up on the Admirals 22 yard line. The Indians were able to punch it in from there as Paul Slaughter topped off the short drive with a five yard run up the middle with 7:40 left in the fourth quarter.
The Admirals gamely tried to come back after the D-B score and tie it up but a couple of crucial fumbles killed their chances. The game ended on a sack as Rule was trying to heave a desperation pass into the Kingsport end zone from the D-B forty yard line.
The Admirals next opponent is another tough non-district foe as they travel to Oak Ridge to take on the Wildcats at Blankenship Field.
